The Ultimate Hair Care Guide for the Fall

After a hot summer full of work, adventure, and heat, it's time to prepare your hair for the Fall season. With a new season comes some TLC for your hair after all that sun, pools, and beaches and, unfortunately, some new hair care struggles.

If you remember from our blog 10 Ways to Protect Your Hair from the Sun, Chlorine, and Salt Water, summer could do a number on your hair if you weren’t prepared to protect it.

In case you didn’t catch that blog here is a quick rundown on summertime damage.

The main culprits behind your hair damage in the summer is the sun, chlorine, and salt water. Any of these could have caused even the healthiest hair some damage.

Like your skin, your scalp can be burned by the heat of the sun. Without protecting your hair and scalp from the sun, your hair goes from shiny and luscious to dry, dull, and brittle.

When your hair is exposed to chlorine, it is stripped of its natural oils, and can cause your hair cuticles to break.

Salt water is damaging because it dries out your hair and scalp, it strips it of all its moisture, leaving it rough and dehydrated.

Are you worried about the damage the summertime could have done to the healthy hair you worked so hard for?

Well it is just time for a change and to learn some tips to salvage your summer hair and prepare it for the new season.

So, out with the old and in with the new!

Soon enough, the leaves will be turning their golden colors, the air will crisp enough for your favorite sweater, and pumpkin spice everything will be back.

What a perfect time to bring some new life into your hair care routines or to try a new color or cut. The possibilities are absolutely endless and you have a whole season to figure it out!

Time to Chop Off that Summer Damage

Consider the fall the perfect time for a big chop, it serves as a big change and as a way to trim off any of the damage that the summer could have done to your hair.

For short hair: Try a tousled bob or if you are feeling really brave a short, choppy pixie cut. If not, make sure to at least cut off that summer damage.

For medium hair: Get a trim and try getting a cut that is just past the shoulders. A cut just past the shoulders, especially with layers is a great style for you to play around with volume.

For long hair: Get a trim to keep your hair healthy but then try showing off your length with layers and a few pieces to frame your face.

For natural hair (our curly/coily friends): Shape is the most important, so get a trim (try a curly cut) and then decide if you want to cut some soft bangs for a new look.

variety of hair types and styles

Of course the best way to decide how you should cut your hair is to look at inspiration and to keep in mind your face shape. Either way, a new cut is a great way to transition with the fall season.

Big Chop Not your Style? Try a Fall Inspired Color

With the leaves changing pretty colors, it is hard not to imagine yourself making a change too. The fall is a great time to bring some warm colors into your hair with highlights or a totally new color.

It is trendy to get pretty brunette ombre with mixes of oranges and reds. Here are some examples of what your fall color could look like:

Fall into New Products and a New Routine

If you start to bring out a new wardrobe in the fall and don’t reevaluate your hair care routine, you should probably start. In the summer we deal with immense amounts of humidity. In the fall we have the exact opposite.

The fall brings crisp, dry air and with it a chance of dried out hair. To combat the fall’s dry air, without drying out your hair or scalp, you have to make a couple of changes to your hair care products.

For starters, try switching your shampoo and conditioner. The key to picking hair care products for the fall is to look for really moisturizing ingredients.

So when searching for your new favorite shampoo and conditioner duo, look for ingredients like jojoba or coconut oil.

You could also look into trying a clarifying shampoo. A clarifying shampoo works like a detox in a way for your scalp and hair, getting rid of any build-up and restoring natural nutrients.

The next way to bring more moisture into your hair care routine is to try deep conditioners or hair masks once a week. You typically leave a deep conditioner or a hair mask in your hair for 10-20 minutes under a hair cap (or if necessary, a plastic bag).

You should look out for our DIY hair mask blog for curated recipes for different hair struggles.

And for an extra little fun to your hair care products try out our new hair products. To help with shine during the crisp weather try our Bright Spot Shine Spray. Bright Spot is a leave-in shine, detangling and smoothing spray and is designed for all hair types.

The superfine mist is multitasking magic that is thoughtfully formulated with light-reflecting properties (UV protection!) giving hair a healthy-looking luster while going beyond with “good-for-you” ingredients (including the moisture friendly ones).

Dry Hair, No Problem

Once you have your fall hair care products down to a science, you can combine them with some of these tips to keep your hair from being dry and damaged this season.

Take Vitamins

Vitamins are a great way to nourish your body, but they are also a great way to impact your hair. Vitamin A, vitamin C, biotin, and iron are all vitamins that will help your hair look shinier and healthier.

Try Using Oils and Serums

Oils and serums are a simple way to add moisture to your hair during the fall season. They replace the natural sebum that your hair produces in between washing your hair.

Avoid Washing Your Hair Everyday

You should refrain from washing your hair more than necessary. Shampoo strips your hair of its natural oils and therefore strips it of any natural moisture.

How often you wash your hair depends on your hair type. Types 1 and 2 have to wash their hair more often to get rid of buildup from the natural oils their hair is producing, and types 3 and 4 have to wash their hair less often because their hair produces less natural oils.

Cut Down on Heat Styling

Since the weather is already going to be drying out your hair, you don’t want to add to the dryness by blow drying, straightening, or curling your hair.

Instead try using the RevAir to style your hair or better yet try out a cute fall hat.

Take Colder Showers

Cold water is a great way to keep moisture in your hair because the cold water actually closes the hair shaft. So after using shampoo and conditioner in your hair try rinsing with cooler water to refresh your scalp and lock in all that moisture.

Protective Styles + Fall Hats

To lock in moisture and protect your hair from the dry weather you can try some protective styles like two-strand twists, braids, wigs, and many more.

Protective styling is all about how you prepare your hair beforehand, making sure you are moisturizing your hair enough and using the right products. If you want an ultimate guide to protective styling check out our blog about it.

Another way to protect your hair from the dry weather is to throw on a hat. A hat will keep you warm when your hair is wet (so you are not forced to blow dry your hair) and it also keeps your hair tucked away from the wind.

different styles of hats

The biggest struggle of wearing a hat is the constant worry of hat hair. Fortunately for you, we have some tips on how to combat hat hair before it even happens.

How to wear hats without the sadness of hat hair:

Before you put the hat on you have to prepare your hair a little bit. You want to give your hair a little volume so that when you put on a hat it doesn’t fall completely flat.

To do so you can use a little hair spray when styling your hair, but try to stay away from teasing your hair because it can be damaging.

After wearing your hat, you want to tousle your hair lightly with your fingers and then you can continue to shape it with hair spray or styling cream.

The key to wearing hats is to find a hat that is perfect for you. Wearing a hat that fits properly is important so you do not get hat hair.

Try RevAir for Drying your Hair

In the summer it is easier for us to stay away from our hot styling tools because of the heat of the weather. During the fall we rather not walk around with our wet hair in the brisk air, so we may lean towards our heat styling tools.

Instead of sacrificing your luscious locks for dry hair during the fall, dry your hair and keep it healthy with the RevAir.

The RevAir Reverse-Air Hair Dryer dries and straighten in a single, hassle-free step, three times faster and with substantially less heat. It also has the power to smooth cuticles to help with damaged hair.

Embrace the Fall Season
