Prepping Before Hitting the Beach or Pool:

  • Deep condition prior to exposure: Before heading out, treat your hair to a nourishing deep conditioning session. This will help fortify your strands with moisture and strengthen them before the potential drying effects of the sun and water.
  • Protective styling: Consider braiding, twisting, or putting your hair in a bun to protect it from excessive exposure to the sun and water. This will help minimize damage and reduce tangling.
  • Apply a leave-in conditioner: Coat your hair with a leave-in conditioner containing UV protection. This will provide an additional layer of moisture and shield your hair from the sun's harmful rays.

Protecting Your Hair from Sun Damage

  • Wear a hat or headscarf: Shield your hair and scalp from direct sunlight by wearing a wide-brimmed hat or wrapping a headscarf. This will help prevent dryness and protect your hair color if you've recently dyed it.
  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure: Limit your time under the scorching sun, especially during peak hours. Seek shade periodically to give your hair a break from the intense heat.
  • Use products with UV filters: Look for hair care products specifically formulated with UV filters. These products help protect your hair from sun damage and minimize color fading.

Minimizing Chlorine and Saltwater Damage

  • Rinse with fresh water beforehand: Wet your hair with fresh water before diving into the pool or ocean. This helps reduce the absorption of chlorinated or saltwater, preventing excessive dryness and damage.
  • Coat your hair with a protective layer: Apply a thin layer of natural oil or leave-in conditioner to your hair before swimming. This acts as a barrier, reducing the amount of chlorine or saltwater that penetrates your strands.
  • Rinse and condition immediately after swimming: As soon as you finish swimming, rinse your hair thoroughly with fresh water. Follow up with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner to restore moisture and prevent any lingering chlorine or salt buildup.

Post-Beach or Pool Hair Care

  • Gentle cleansing: Use a sulfate-free or moisturizing shampoo to cleanse your hair after exposure to the beach or pool. This helps remove any residual salt, chlorine, or product buildup without stripping away essential moisture.
  • Deep conditioning treatment: Treat your hair to a deep conditioning treatment once a week to replenish lost moisture and nourish your strands. Look for products with hydrating ingredients like shea butter, aloe vera, or coconut oil.
  • Detangle with care: After washing your hair, use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to gently detangle your curls or coils. Start from the ends and work your way up to prevent breakage.
  • Moisturize and seal: Apply a leave-in conditioner or a moisturizing cream to damp hair to lock in moisture. Follow up with a natural oil or butter to seal the moisture and add shine.

Maintaining healthy and beautiful curls during beach and pool days may seem hard, but it is achievable with proper care and attention. By prepping your hair beforehand, protecting it from sun damage, minimizing exposure to chlorine and saltwater, and following a post-care routine, you can enjoy the water while keeping your curls and coils moisturized, frizz-free, and resilient. Embrace the summer with confidence, knowing that your hair is in great shape to withstand the beach and pool adventures that await you!
